unbeta. and i'm confused.
Aiba wondered. Within the past years of they being together, was it because of Sho really love him or is it because for the sake of the promised the man has made to Jun?
Years after years, decade after decade, it passed with doubt revolving in his mind. With the thought such as ‘what if Sho decided to live with him just because he has no one else?” and ‘what if there’s no love between them but they just live together because that man has to?” makes Aiba to wonder if he ever mean anything to Sho.
After all, almost a century they’ve been together, while he was longing for at least an ‘I love you’ to slip through Sho’s lips, not even once he ever heard the man says so. Not even to him, or maybe in a conversation the man made with Ohno.
Years after years passed, Aiba couldn’t help thinking that maybe Sho always kept the hatred towards him. he’s a vampire after all and Sho hated his kind before. What if the hatred from before never faded?
It hurts him thinking all that.
Indeed, Sho was the most gentle towards him. But Aiba couldn’t confirm it, not until he heard the simple three words from the man’s lips.
It was Sho’s birthday. Aiba wasn’t really sure of what he should do that he ended up doing something for the man, celebrating his birthday.
Sho on the other hand, was not amused.
“I don’t like it,” Sho said, right after Aiba wished him ‘happy birthday’ and showed him the cake he was working on overnight.
“You don’t like the cake, or you don’t like to celebrate the birthday, Sho-chan?”
“Both,” sho said, not bother to take a look at the man who frustration was obviously shown on his face. “I just hope you to understand that birthday just remind me of my dead parent, Masaki. They were the one who gave birth to me. Celebrating that will only gave me pain rather than happiness,”
“I just- I don’t know what should I do to- to-“he stuttered on his words, trying to find a best word to continue. But in the end, he stopped. His mouth seal tight as he looked at Sho who was looking at him with a frown.
Aiba wanted to ask about everything but he couldn’t. All the words seem to stuck in his throat. Or maybe his ego was the one preventing him from asking it. He refused to look like a beggar in front of the man, but at the same time he just couldn’t stop hoping.
It took them a moment of silently staring at each other before Aiba broke it.
“I’m going to Nino’s”
“Do you want me to tag along?” Sho asked almost immediately, but Aiba quickly stopped him.
“No. happy- nevermind”
He leaved Sho’s behind, ignoring how confused Sho was at the moment.
********
“I don’t understand,” Aiba voiced out his frustration. “I mean, I just want to show him how meaningful he is to me. But-“
“I’m sure he saw it, Aiba-san,” Nino said when Aiba stopped from talking, leaving his words hanging there. “It’s just he didn’t want to say it,”
“Why not?”
“Well, because it’s simply not needed,”
Aiba pouted. Nino’s words somehow didn’t make any sense to him at the moment. How could someone refused to tell how meaningful the person in his life? Wouldn’t that only led to another misunderstanding?
“you’ll aging if you keep frowning like that Aiba-san,” Nino said, chuckling when he saw the man forming a sour expression, muttering ‘it’s not like a vampire aging anyway’. Nino couldn’t help throwing a look at Ohno, his life partner who was looking at him with a smile on his lips, grabbing his hand as if telling him how important he is in the man’s life.
Nino smiled at the troubled man.
“Trust me, Aiba-san,” Nino said as he approached the man. “Sometimes, love doesn’t need words. Enough with your existence will make your life feel enough,”
“But I don’t feel that. I mean of course I’m glad he’s there in my life. But, I just can’t let go of my doubt on him. What if we just live together because I am his last resort? What if there’s no love for me?” Aiba shot a question after another.
“On contrary Aiba-chan, what would you feel if the answer to your questions is yes? That he doesn’t love you and living with you is his last option?” This time, it was Ohno who’s asking.
Aiba heaved a sighed. “I feel betrayed,”
The Ohno-Ninomiya partner fell silent. The two threw a look at each other, frowning as if the answer from Aiba troubled them as well.
“If that really matters to you, Aiba-chan, why don’t you ask? Say it out loud,” Ohno finally said something just to break the silent.
“I can’t,”
“Why not?” Ohno shot another question. “What you need is the truth. Believe me, even if it is really hurt, you’ll be glad once you finally get the answer to what have been bother you,”
Aiba fell silent. There might be some truth in his best friend words. The only thing that he worried about was how hurt is the truth going to be? What if it was too hurt for him to cope? What if it’ll hurt him more than he ever thought? What if he can’t move on from the truth forever?
All the question seems to be torturing him from inside, damaging every part of him inch by inch, making him to feel like crumbling into ashes. Just the way Jun died that night.
Jun. what if those destiny things they’ve been saying never came out as the truth. What if his choice to stay with Sho was a big mistake that none of them know? What if the ritual of ‘marking your partner while making sex’ was just a meaningless ritual?
Jun’s death was going to be one agonizing death.
“Stop speculating, Aiba-kun. When in doubt, it’s much better to ask. If the truth hurts you later on, we’ll be here for you,” was what Nino said, noticing how the man was being too absorbed into his own thought. For century he’s known Aiba. Despite how powerful that man is in their world, Aiba still has some flaws and one of it was how the man often over thinking of something. Nino just didn’t want the man to keep thinking about such matter, affecting him in every other way. Especially if it will harm the man.
Aiba once again heaved a sigh. He took a glance at the two couple, thinking how wonderful his life is if he and Sho are just the same as the two, who loved doesn’t need to be expressed by words. Sighing, he started to leave.
“You’re leaving?” Nino asked, worried could be heard in his voice. Aiba just nodded at him.
“It’s almost daylight. i need to arrive home before morning,”
The two nodded at him, hoping whatever they’ve been telling him will at least ease his messy mind.
*******
Aiba didn’t even reply to the two as they said ‘take care’ to him. His mind has been too absorbed in thinking about those questions earlier in which lead him to an open ending. Nothing as solution and that makes him feel even worst.
“I am such an idiot for thinking such things,” was what he said at himself.
He halted when he heard the rustling sound coming from the bushes. His instinct didn’t betray him when he told that it is the movement of his enemy.
His mind trying to project the shield to protect himself from whoever his enemy was. He succeeds for a moment though before his shield faded, and whatever his enemy was attacking him with succeed hitting his body. He felt to the ground, groaning as every attack hit every part of him.
And then it stopped.
The surrounding was so quiet that Aiba wasn’t really aware where about he was at the moment. He tried to digest everything he could get as a clue but before he could, the sound of people laughing startled him, stopping his deduction.
“You’re a mess, Matsumoto Aiba Masaki-san,” a voice from behind him said. He wanted to turn to take a look at the owner but the pain he felt earlier was conquering every part of his body, hurting him by every move he make. He failed when he tried to form another shield for himself making his enemy to throw him a mocking laugh.
“It’s painful isn’t it? When you was wondering if whatever you’re doing for him is enough. You can’t help doubting about his love to you, isn’t it, Masaki-san?”
“Who are you?” Aiba panting hard as he shot the question to his enemy. The man laughed his heart out.
“You really want to know who I am, Masaki-san?” the man asked. He circled Aiba once before he kneeled in front of the man, grabbing his hair, forcing Aiba to look at him. “I’m among the one who you guys refuse to kill last time. I’m here, as a revenge for killing our leader before. and I’m gonna make sure your death will be agonizing!”
The men let go of his hair harshly, laughing when he saw how Aiba’s head hit the ground.
Aiba wasn’t give up at first. The pain was unbearable but he still tried to project the shield from his mind. He managed to do one but it was too weak to protect him from his enemy attack.
“Your messy mind makes it a lot easier for me, Matsumoto Aiba-san. Thanks to that Sakurai, who his love wasn’t really enough to convince you-“
“He loves me,” Aiba said despite the pain he felt.
“No Aiba-san. He didn’t. He never loves you. Why should someone who was born as a human like him, who live was ruined by a vampire loved you? if you ever have think that he did, it’s a pathetic illusion you’ve been creating, Masaki-san,”
Aiba know whatever his enemy was saying was a lie. He knew it was a lie but why is it so painful hearing all the word? Why was it affecting him as if it was the truth?
“Give up, Masaki-san. From the night that your parent was killed, you already lost everything. Just when you thought you finally have someone, no, Sakurai Sho was never that someone-“ the man approached him once again, grabbing him by his hair as he continued. “he was never that someone who love you!”
And he was under controlled. Aiba wasn’t sure how. His mind was telling him no, but no matter how hard he tried, tears was still flowing out from his eyes. It’s confusing. He didn’t want it, but his lips move, shivering as he uttered his request that he never want. “Kill me then,”
Three words leaved his mouth and for the first time within the century Aiba felt panic. He could see his enemy laughing mockingly at him, kick him hard as if he’s just a piece of trash. Pain after pain felt all over his body; from the kick, or maybe even the mind controlled. At one time, when it was too much to bear, Aiba wished for him to die.
But suddenly, everything stopped. The torture, the physical pain, the doubt. Everything. And his attacker voice was no longer heard. Aiba couldn’t even feel the attacker presence by his side. But he could sense someone else. It was…
“As much I hate you for attacking him, I hate you more for telling all those lie to him, you piece of shit!”
Sho’s voice was so cold as he said those words. Aiba never heard him that way before, making him sure enough that the man was furious.
Aiba chose to stay on the ground, curling by his side as he refused to see what’s going to happen. The sound of someone screaming of agony, begging for mercy was heard that Aiba was hoping so much for it to come to an end soon. And when it end, he didn’t bother to stand from where he was, silently ignoring his life partner presence.
“Stand up, Masaki,” Sho’s voice gave him a jolt of surprise. It wasn’t as cold as before but it doesn’t sound good either. “Stand or I’m gonna force you to,”
With his left strength, he pushed himself to a sitting position, glancing at Sho who was waiting for him to stand. And when Aiba finally did, Sho didn’t even bother to talk to him. Instead, he walked away with Aiba following closely behind him.
None of them speaks a word. Only the sound of the leaves rustling was heard, sometime startling Aiba as they make their way to their home.
It was almost half of their journey, when Sho broke the tension between them.
“How’s Ohno-san and Ninomiya-san?” Sho asked, sending another jolt of surprise to his partner.
“Fine, I guess. Seems like they’re planning to adopt another child,”
Sho shrugged. Once again, silent embraced them.
“You know what, Masaki. It’s hurt seeing you being attacked like that. I don’t even think twice to kill that lowlife for hurting you like that,”
Sho said after a while. When he received nothing as a respond from Aiba, he stopped moving, turned to have a look at Aiba.
“But would you like to know what hurts the most?” Aiba rose his head to look at the man. “When I watch how you doubt my love,”
Aiba lowered his head again.
“what should I do, Sho-chan? You never even say it out loud. You showed like you never care what we have between us. Whenever I tried to show it to you how much you mean to me, you’re just pushed me away. I can’t help wondering that-“
“That I don’t love you?” Sho cut him. Sighing, he continued. “Why not?”
“Because you never say it out loud! I was waiting for it. Every now and then. I can’t stop thinking that I’m your last resort!”
“You are not my last resort, Masaki. Ever since I first met you, I’ve already promised myself to protect you with my whole heart. Even if we’re not destined to be lovers, you’re still the one for me to protect. If it wasn’t for love, what was it for?”
Aiba fell silent.
“I don’t need you to prove your love to me, Masaki. Because you’re the one I need. I don’t need for you to prove it because I will always know that you love me. and I thought that you’ll know that I am feeling exactly the same towards you,”
Sho paused biting his lips.
“Just- just whatever happened today, never let it happen again. I don’t know if I can stand it if something happen to you,”
Aiba could see how the man has so many things to say. But somehow, there’s nothing came from Sho afterwards. And when it was too much for him to bear, Sho leaned in, pulling Aiba towards him as he kissed him on his lips.
Sho quickly move away from him once they broke the kiss. They continued their way back to their house in silent.
Before they passed the gate to their mansion, Sho stopped.
“I love you, Masaki. Please stay safe,” he said, staring deeply into his soul mate’s eyes. Grabbing the man by the hand, he pulled Aiba to walk side by side with him.
“I want a child then,” Aiba said serious. Once again, Sho stopped walking.
“I don’t care. Really. if that child will make you stay by my side, let’s take one,” Sho replied, started to walk again only to be stopped by Aiba.
“I don’t want to take one,” Aiba giggled. Finally understood what his soulmate mean, Sho smirked.
“Never whine if you feel sore by morning, Masaki,” he said, raising his eyebrows as he shot another question. “ And you know that it’s fruitless right?”
Aiba chuckled. He closed the distance between them, muttering seducing to Sho’s ears.
“let’s pretend like it's not,"
Sho didn’t need to be told twice. He knew what to do next.
