(Part 1) - (Part 2)

He started to remember everything. Every part of the game he had created. That basic information he had put into the main part of the coding.

Aiba never told him their plan. It was like a march towards an execution block as they made their way to a large area that was full of helicopters. Even when both Jun and Ohno part their ways toward different helicopters, none of them could even form a smile. For once, they took him into a hug, telling him good luck and leave without even turning back.

He didn’t like this.

“Aiba-“

“I’ll tell you the plan later. Come, hop in,” Aiba said, opening the door to the helicopter. Reluctantly, Nino obeyed.

It was a silent flight. With Aiba piloting, Nino kept wondering what was going on inside the character’s mind. He looked at the other two helicopters ahead of them, wondering if the plan they had in their heads will work for them.

But before he could hope for it to work, the buzzing sound appeared again. It took him a moment for him to process what these characters had in mind when all of sudden he saw laser beams fired from the two helicopters, shooting all the bugs as they head straight into the swarm.

“Aiba!” Nino yelled, hoping for his words would reach the guy’s ear. “What’s happening?”

The helicopter shook when they entered through the swarm, startling themselves as Aiba tightened his grip on the cyclic stick, not noticing the panic in Nino’s face.

“Aiba!”

“We need to find the light. It is the core to this universe. It will lead you to your way out.”

“What’s the necessity for all of you to fight- Aiba look out!” Nino yelled just as the first helicopter ahead exploded and one of its pieces flying through and almost hitting them. Nino watched in horror as metals from the helicopter crashed down the bugs had attacked. Nino’s stomach fell when he saw a body falling through the air. He recognized it as Jun..

“Aiba! Do something!” he yelled, watching as another group of bugs attacked the second helicopter.

“It was expected, Nino. Our mission as your helpers now is to send you off from this world. It’s not in our agreement to save each other.”

“This is bullshit!” Nino yelled, watching in horror how Ohno’s helicopter met the same fate as Jun’s. His heart fell, feeling all those sort of regret for not making things right the first time, ruining things he had created.

“Sending me off… you’re going to survive this attack, right?”

Aiba didn’t answer him. In response, Nino enraged, “Then you should just let me kill you back then!”

“I can’t let you kill me.”

“It’s just the same what you’re trying to do now, Aiba. Stop talking nonsense!”

“It’s not the same, Nino. If you kill me, I died and I won’t be revived. It’s not in the code. But if I died ‘naturally’-“

“This is not natural!”

In the chaos around them, Nino felt like his world stopped when his eyes met Aiba’s as he heard one by one the words uttered by the man.

“You need to understand, Nino.”

“I’m trying Aiba! I really am! What I don’t understand is your reasoning.“

“This is the only way, Nino.” Aiba yelled against the cacophony around them. “I am not that powerful to keep everything alive, but I can send you off because you put the “reset” code in me. But I can’t die with you killing me. That mean the enemy has won the game instead of you, the player. You were tricked into his scheme. Remember?”

Nino could feel his grip on the seat tighten. How mess up has this place had been? This was not what he had planned. Not even once he had this kind of idea in his mind, yet, why did all these kinds of threat existed?

“This place has more damage than you think, Nino. I believe all you can do is to revive it again. You need to leave this world in order for you to help us and in order to do that, I need to sacrifice myself and that would reset this world. Please understand that!”

“But-“

“No but!” Aiba cut him instantly. ‘You betrayed my trust once, Nino. Don't betray it again.”

They were a few meters from the bright light coming from the volcano up ahead. Nino hoped he could at least reached it safely.
It happened too suddenly. The helicopter was jerked off to the side as bugs swarmed around them. He met Aiba’s eyes, panicked and sadness filled them. They were running out of time. But before they could reach to safety, Aiba mouthed to him, “I believe in you.”

Like a cue, he was pulled towards the bright light, screaming his lung out Aiba's name as Aiba was thrown from the helicopter, falling to the ground, his body seems to be engulf in the combination of the smoke coming from their burning helicopter and the spiraling dirt. His stomach grew squimished as the helicopter spun uncontrollably, and the universe he had created- spiraled to the bright light. the universe collapsing out of existence .

His body was thrown back to the real world, landing hard on his back with the controllers in his hands and the oculus rift he wore earlier was knocked away from him. A big lump stuck inside his throat bearing all the frustration inside him.

But nothing disappointed him more than seeing a large red letters blinking again and again on his computer screen reading, “system failure” against a gray distortion screen.

Exactly the color of the collapsed universe he just left.

*
Epilogue.

It has been five years since the unbelievable thing happened to him.

To him, the whole experienced was a whole nightmare. Yet, it wasn’t a nightmare that he ever wanted to forget. The experienced taught him a lot. To never give up. To have a little trust. Most importantly, how those self-evolve characters had taught him the value of friendship.

He did remember how absentminded, yet brilliant, Ohno was and also how harsh yet impressive, Matsumoto was. And of course, how could he forget that one character named Aiba or Ayber, whatever his name, who kept facing the challenges with such positivity.

He missed them all. Hence, he knew he had treated them right.

“Mr. Ninomiya. It seems that this is the final installment of the game you had develop, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is. Ancient City Ruins – Final Escape. I really hope that everyone would enjoy it as it reaches its finale,” he replied to the reporter, earnestly answering the question.

“Your characters seem to have a good influenced toward the users all around the world. They seem to adore them a lot,” another reporter had shot him a comment.

Nino smiled. “They deserved it then. I mean-“ he chuckled when he heard the audience laughing at his first sentence.  “Their values deserved all those admiration. As their creator, I am amazed.“

“Will there be a sequel to the game then?”

This time Nino smirked.

“Well, clearly it was named Final Escape. I’m not sure if I can make it anymore clearer than that.”

The audience laughed. In spite of that, he decided to continue, trying to joke around.

“I just think, these characters need a rest too. They have been together with me for these past five years. Man, I should give them an annual leave.”

Once again, the room erupted with laughter.

“One last question, Mr. Ninomiya. Often, you talked about them as if they’re alive. Are those characters were actually inspired from real people?”

The question made him fall silent for a moment. Of course, there’s no possible way he could tell them the truth. Hence, he replied “I wonder…” before he gave his final bow, thanking the audience before he left the stage.

For five years, he wondered if it really happened and if those characters were actually alive or just happened to be a result of malicious bugs in the system that time.

But when that night, he played the game once again, he saw Ayber, MJ-II and Big-No waving at him, he knew…

“Maybe it was me who really needs a holiday,” he said, smirking at those three characters inside the screen, who were laughing at him.

Author Notes 2:
*Shuriken- it’s the ninja star
*Ayber, MJ-II and Big-NO are Aiba’s, Jun’s and Ohno’s character in the METS CM. It does have some reference in this fics (Jun is a snipper, Ohno is a cyborg and the part where Jun suggested Nino to turn a zombie into a woman when he shoots them with the bazooka)
*This fic was inspired by a lot of movie/ game. Just to name a few, Wreck it Ralph, Subway Surf, Temple Run and etc. I’m writing this based on the image I had in my head and most of them were influenced by the visual from the movie and games.
