CHAPTER 12
The emergency room which I had once walked into in the past was now in total chaos. The beeping sound from the machines, connected to my body sounded so sharp to my ears. The doctor’s instructions to the nurses about the equipment had no meaning for me.
The pain was spread all over my body and I couldn’t understand why I was in no position to move any of my limbs. Every single move caused so much pain that I wanted to scream but my voice wouldn’t let me do so.
I tried, with my uttermost effort to move my right hand, so that I could reach anything, anyone. The pain didn’t let me. Then the sound of the door being open was heard and another man with a white coat walked in.
“Broken spine. I’ve seen this kind of case before, no possibilities of recovering”
“MRI shows blood clotting due to the high impact when his head hit the ground. At this moment, chance of survival is zero”
“He’s losing a lot of blood, prepare another tube”
Those explanations echoed in my ears. So, that means that I’m dying?! I chuckled under my breath. But why do I feel so calm. Why don’t I get panicked over the fact that I’m going to die earlier than my mother or maybe Aiba-chan?
Aiba-chan.
God is this the miracle You gave after all the things I asked for? If it is, I have nothing to whine about.
I tried again and finally reached the doctor who was standing next to me. The pain I felt was ignored. When I finally touched his hand, my lips formed a faint smile.
“Sensei…” I called him weakly. He looked at me before lowering his body so that he could hear what I was going to whisper. “I’m going to die, right?”
“Don’t give up now, Ninomiya-san. We’ll try our best to save you. You should try your best as well” he said, trying to sound confident. But I could feel hesitation in the way he explained everything.
I shook my head. My hand was gripping the doctor’s coat as I spoke my next words.
“Please… take my heart… let Aiba-san have it”
The doctor frowned. He knew exactly what I was trying to say, since he’s the one who was in charge of Aiba-chan’s case.
“It… will work… for him… and my liver to Sakurai-san. Please…. Grant my last wish, sensei”
I’m getting weak. I just knew it. I could hear the beeping sound of my heartbeat and I could tell that I wouldn’t make it. I asked myself if I’m ever going to regret it myself, making such a decision to leave all I had behind just for the sake of friendship.
But when I closed my eyes, I could only see Aiba-chan’s smile. It was the only image I could form and I’m sure that’s the only thing I wanted to see at the moment; my friend smiling because of happiness.
I startled when I heard the sound of the door being opened harshly before a familiar voice wailed to my ears.
“Nino! What have you done?”
Aiba-chan.
“I told you to take care of yourself. You broke that promise. I’m not gonna forgive you”
I was too weak to laugh but I still tried my best to form a smile.
“You’re kind hearted. You’ll forgive me; that’s for sure”
His tears were falling on my hand as he cried, his hand holding mine. It felt like burn to my skin. I tried to wipe it away but I didn’t succeed.
I tried to lead my hand towards his face in order to wipe his tears but the touch was not stable enough to do it in the end. At least, it still made him look at me.
“Nino…” he sobbed, choke recognizable in his words. I smiled. I saw both Ohno-kun and Jun-kun as I scanned the room once again. And then I saw Sakurai-san standing at the door, watching the two of us in horror. I laughed in my head.
“Sakurai-san is here, ne, Aiba-chan” Aiba-chan didn’t respond to my words though. I continued. “Did he tell you that he loves you?”
My best friend nodded.
“Isn’t that great? You guys are just silly for not telling each other about it”
“That doesn’t matter anymore!” he snapped causing the other man to startle. “I don’t care. I don’t want his love anymore. I just want you to survive. Please…”
I shook my head weakly, wiping his tears again. His sobs was getting uncontrolled as he speaks again.
“You can’t die, Nino. Who’s going to take care of your mother? Who’s going to take care of Yumi-chan? You love her right? You can’t die!”
I smile faintly. Yumi; the girl who loves me… the one I love. But I’m sure God wouldn’t be so cruel to her. She’ll find another fine man…. much better than me…. I’m sure. The one who will take care of her just the way Aiba-chan takes care of me.
I cupped his face with my hand, smiling at him. It’s the same way he smiled at me when he told me he was fine with his fate. It sounded so weak when I spoke my words to him. It was probably the last thing I could ask him to do.
“Listen, Aiba-chan. I love her. I really do. That’s why you have to live, because you have to tell her how much I loved her; to tell her how much I regret that I can’t share my life with her anymore. You’re going to tell her that I’m really sorry to leave her now. You’re going to tell her to find one fine man and never let that man hurt her”
He then cried even more.
“And Aiba-chan, you need to remember that I love you too… as your friend, I just want to see you at least once in your life happy. That’s why I believe my sacrifice won’t be in vain. I leave my love for Yumi behind because I want you to be happy. You’re my dearest friend who has suffered enough because of me. I’m in your way. Just… please… let me do this one favor for you. That’s all I could ask”
His cries were getting uncontrolled right after I had finished those words. It made me feel worried of him. He’s sick and I was afraid it was going to make his situation worse.
“Take care of my mum for me ne, Aiba-chan. You don’t have to be there all the time, just once in a while would be enough” I paused. “And please… keep on smiling. That makes me happy… more than you could tell”
He nodded. His hand was gripping my hand as tight as possible.
But unfortunately the outcome of my words was even worse than expected.
Suddenly his grip on my hand weakened. The next minute, he’s found on the floor; he had fainted. The room became chaotic once again. All I could hear were loud voices, quick movements, instructions… The doctors kept running like crazy. The medical assistants carried Aiba-chan to another bed before pushing him to another side of the room.
I turned to look at the other three men inside the room, my eyes pleading for them to come near me. They did.
“Thank you- for being my friends” I said. Their eyes were wet with tears. “Take care of my friend once I’m gone ne, Oh-chan, Jun-kun,”
I didn’t have much time… so I was just going to say how much I felt grateful to have had them as my friends all this time. They tried to smile at my words, but I could tell how hard it was for them.
I turned to my other side to see Sakurai-san standing next to me with the exact same expression written on his face.
“I’m sorry… Ninomiya-san” I shook my head.
“No. I’m sorry…” I gripped his hand just as tight as my hand could do. “Promise me, Sakurai-san… Promise me you will never hurt my friend again… or I’m gonna haunt you forever”
He chuckled. But at the same time, he nodded.
“I promise I will never hurt him again. I will give him all the happiness that he deserves. I promise you, Ninomiya-san”
I smiled weakly.
“Thank you”
It happened way too fast. A jolt of pain was felt at every single corner of my body. It was so painful that it made me pray to God to end it fast. I heard how the nurses and the doctor asked the three of them to leave room instantly as the beeping sound was faster than before.
The room entered chaos for the third time that day. The pain I felt was twice as strong as the one I had felt earlier. In spite of that, with my last strength, I gripped the doctor’s hand, begging.
“Save… both of them… please… sensei”
And my whole energy left me. As I closed my eyes, our promise, made years ago, was replaying in my mind.
“Let’s stay friends forever, ne?! Let’s be best friends; the ones who will stand up for each other when we get into trouble. Let’s be each other’s protector!”
“You’ll be a troublesome friend for me, and I’m sure I’ll be yours too. It might take us a long time to stop that… perhaps until the end of our lives… but let’s protect each other, ne?”
You’ve done your part Aiba-chan. Now let me do mine.

Epilogue
“Nino… it has been a long time, hasn’t it?” Aiba put down his scroll and brought his hand together reciting some prayer to his late friend.
“I’m sorry that I didn’t pay you a visit for a whole year. I was busy. With classes of course” he said once he finished with his prayer. He took 1 scoop of water and poured it over the tomb.
“I’ve graduated today you know; Jun-kun and Yumi-chan too. It seems like she can’t move on. I know I’ve already told you that she’s broken down. It was after telling her your wish for her. At first, I thought that she was mad at me because she used to refuse to even meet with me. But I believe she’s just sad because she didn’t get the chance to see you for at least one last time”
Aiba chuckled. Slowly, he took his seat somewhere near while keeping ‘talking’ with Nino.
It has already been 2 years. He knows there are so many things that have changed during these past two years. Sho had already graduated a year ago and within that year Aiba refused to have any kind of contact with the man. He ignored everything; phone calls, messages, mails, letters, everything. The only thing that he couldn’t ignore is Mai. Just for one reason though; because Nino’s piece is inside of her.
“We’re fine now. Whatever you’ve donated to us, it works perfectly fine. I met with Mai-chan a few days ago. It seems she entered the same University as us now, following perhaps her brother’s footsteps”
2 years. Many things changed for Masaki except for one: the hurt of losing his best friend, who used to always be there when he needed him, in spite of what might have happened. While everyone stayed away from him because of his sexual orientation, Nino was there, protecting him from all the insults he received.
“Your mum is fine too. I visit her once in a while. Your sister is there too… did you know she’s getting married?”
And here it’s where he breaks.
“You’re cruel!! I told you I wanted to be your best man at your wedding. But you’re not even here now” he sobs even louder. And when it’s getting out of hand, he closes his mouth with the palm of his hand.
“Gomen. You asked me to keep smiling ne, Nino. But how can I keep smiling now that you’re not here?”
His sobs continued. He didn’t say anything afterwards, aside from plucking the grass near him while his tears kept on falling like a broken damn. Every single memory was flying in his mind and he couldn’t stop them no matter what.
And when he had it enough, he stood up removing the mortar board from his head before placing it on the stone.
“We had promised before that we were going to graduate together right?! But it seems we can’t. I leave this here for you. Don’t worry about it… ne? You’re right. I’ll always forgive you. No matter how bad your mistakes might be”
“Because you’re a good guy” a voice heard from behind made him startle. It was a familiar one. He turned his head behind his shoulder to see a man in his suit standing not too far from him.
“Senpai” he acknowledges the other’s present bowing a little. He could see how Sho reacted, after having heard the way he called him, but he couldn’t care less. He stood up straight and turned back to look at Nino’s picture once again before being ready to leave.
“Be happy there, Nino. I will always remember you” he said at the end and started walking away.
He hadn’t even made 3 steps forwards, when a hand stopped him by gripping his wrist. He harshly pushed it away, without even bothering to look at the one who did it.
“Aiba-san… I…”
“I’m in hurry, Sakurai-san. I don’t have much time”
“Just… for a while… I- I just want to talk to you” the senior said sounding rather desperate. Aiba sighed before turning to look back at him. “How are you?”
“Fine. Good. Anything related to it. Especially when I’m no longer in contact with you” Aiba said wrapping his arms together. There’s no smile on his lips, and Sho knew, the man is already done being nice to him.
“Congratulations on your graduation. I’m…proud of you” Aiba rolled his eyes. “And… I missed you too”
This time, Sho saw a smirk being written on Aiba’s face.
“I’m not the Aiba Masaki you used to know in the past, Sakurai-san. My life has been so much better without you around and I want to keep it that way”
Sho sighs.
“I know”
“Then, don’t bother me. Stop sending me those messages, mails, everything… because it annoys me to hell”
“But…”
“I’m done talking to you. It’s getting on my nerves. Whatever feelings I used to have for you in the past, they’re no longer there. So don’t bother me anymore. Just get lost” Aiba said with his shoulders moving up and down as he was trying to control his anger. After having thrown to him one last glare, he left Sho alone.
Sho watched the man walking away from him until his figure got lost from sight. The pain he felt coming from Aiba’s words was burning in his chest. But he knows well he deserves it after all the pain he had caused to him.
“I’m sorry” he muttered. “I’m sorry, Ninomiya-san. He hates me now, and once again, I don’t know what I should do”
He stared at the picture placed on top of the tomb, as if he was staring at the real person.
“But I know I can’t give up now. Because of the promise we made, right? You sacrificed your life for him and for my sister too. It’s time for me to also fulfill my part of that promise right?”
He paused.
“But... I don’t know how I should do it. Please... I beg you… Send me some help so that I can mend his broken heart. Please… let him accept my feelings for him and I swear I’ll dedicate the rest of my life to make him happy. This is my last promise towards you, Ninomiya-san. I beg you”
He felt so stupid talking to someone who wasn’t even there. It felt worthless. He knew the mistakes he had done in the past, made him unworthy of any possible chance to win all over again Aiba’s heart. But the love he had for him never faded. On the contrary, it was growing every day, despite the distance between them.
He suddenly felt a soft breeze on his nape, as if someone was passing through him. He turned around just to see no one. But then he heard a soft voice echoed in his mind.
“He still has those feelings for you, Sakurai-san. Work harder. And you’ll find the way to his heart”
Sho frowned. Is he gone mad?
“No you’re not. But let me tell you something. Hurt him ever again, and I swear to haunt you until you die of madness”
Sho chuckled. He was sure he was just hallucinating hearing Nino’s voice like that, but he still tried to laugh it off.
“I will never let him go if I ever get a second chance with him, Ninomiya-san. Please, help me” he repeated. Then, he felt again a soft breeze on his nape. This time he didn’t hear any kind of voice in his head. But he knew that even if he couldn’t receive any help from above, he was going to work harder for it by himself. Just for the sake of his love towards Aiba. And most importantly, for the sake of his last promise to Nino.
