Chapter 4
December reaches us in a blink of an eye.

I feel useless. I was so busy with my work, I failed to realize how degraded Aiba-chan had become in his studies. He was so busy with his PA work that he didn’t manage his time properly for his studies. And with the final exams reaching us in the meantime, I didn’t know if my best friend was going to survive his first term here.

“Why don’t you ask for a break?” I ask as I get the chance to have a conversation with him one night. He shakes his head.

“He has way too much work to do. I need to help him.”

“Aiba-chan…”

“I’m fine. I’ll manage it somehow. I’m a miracle boy right?”

I shook my head this time.

To be honest, I envy the man staying in the same room as me. He’s so bright, cheerful and positive. And I’m the complete opposite. While he thinks that everything is possible, I keep everything logical and everything in its place.

In this case, there was no fucking way that a person who didn’t touch a single book or note, and committed to being someone’s PA for a majority of his day could pass his exams.

“I thought, you told me a junior should know his senior so you'd be able to ask for their help when you need it,” I grin as I speak. “Why don’t you ask for his help?”

“Who?”

“Sakurai-san?”

“BAKA!” he snaps, at the same time blushing. What the hell is wrong with this man?

But then…

“I’ll try to ask him later. But… studying with him is gonna be tough. Come with me?”

What the hell am I just suggesting my best friend?

“I’m just joking. Stop it,” I reply, panicked.

My whole plan to tell him about a secret I’ve been keeping away from him was ruined by my own silly words. I should have known my best friend better. That he just can’t filter out what is good or bad for him.

Why on earth am I suggesting that?

I watch him busily putting his notes and books inside his bag with a smile plastered on his lips. I could tell he was happy. Of what, only god knows. I’m hoping that it’s not my earlier suggestion. It’ll bring me and him troubles.

But then, I feel discouraged.

I really need to tell him this. About me having a girlfriend. I have been keeping this secret for too long already. He might be mad if I tell him this.

I try to find the right words to begin our conversation again. But in the end I could find none. Desperate, I blurt out my secret, causing his face to change immediately as I finished.

“I have a girlfriend.”

“What?” he asks.

“Y-you heard me right. I have a girlfriend.”

“For how long?”

“Ever since before I join the music club?”

Silent.

But then he snaps.

“So you keep the secret from me? For all this time? You’re unbelievable.”

I make an annoyed face.

“What the-?”

You kept a secret from me, Nino. How could you? I thought we both agree that there would be no secrets between us. You just- just…” He can't bring himself to say what he wants to, maybe it's about how bad a friend I’ve been. But after a while, it seems he can’t find any good words to continue and just gives up.

“I can’t believe you'd keep something like that to yourself,” he says with a pout. I snort, annoyed by his words.

“Wait a minute!” I pause, thinking if I should say what is on my mind. “When you’re applying to be his PA, you didn’t tell me that…”

“And you found that out!”

“BY MYSELF!”

Before I know it, Aiba-chan stands from his chair, and walks towards me.

“So, just because you’re the one telling me, it’s fine?” He takes his bag before heading out. “So you take this as revenge that I didn’t tell you about my application before?”

I sigh.

“it’s not what I mean…” Before I could continue, he cuts me off.

“Whatever. I have class, and I don’t want to talk about it,” and the he leaves.

Sighing, I ruffle my already messy hair.

******

Aiba-chan didn’t join me for lunch that day. I know he is mad, hence I refuse to call him asking if he was going to join me or not. I want to let him cool down before discussing this again.

I know he wasn’t mad at me for having a girlfriend. He was just mad at me for not telling him about it. It was normal to have everything known between the two of us. I just broke the rule by not telling him this. I’m sure when he was applying to be Sakurai-san's PA, he would have told me about it.

I regret what I was saying earlier.

But when I was about to enter the next class, my phone vibrates in my pocket, indicating a message I received. I fish it out, before a familiar name appears on the screen.

From: Aiba-chan
Subject: group study
Message: I took your suggestion seriously and I ask about doing a group study with him. He said he’s fine doing it. So….

Accompany me??
---------------------------------------------------------End of Message---------------------------------------------------

I shook my head.

He’s an idiot. I type him a reply.

From: Ninomiya
Subject: re: group study
Message: You’re an idiot. You know that?
When? And where?
---------------------------------------------------------End of Message---------------------------------------------------

A few minutes later I receive a reply from him.

From: Aiba-chan
Subject: re: group study
Message: I know. That’s the reason I need his help with my study. After all he’s the reason.
8pm, library, discussion room 4. He already made the reservation to the room. Don’t be late.
And I’m still mad at you.
---------------------------------------------------------End of Message---------------------------------------------------

From: Ninomiya
Subject: re: group study
Message:  I didn’t mean my word earlier. Sorry. Though… I’m not sure if he really wants me to be there, I’ll try. See you tonight.
And… Sorry.

---------------------------------------------------------End of Message---------------------------------------------------

I didn’t receive a reply from him after that.

***
I see Aiba-chan sitting alone in the room as I arrive at the room on time. He looked so nervous that he didn’t notice me knocking on the door before I decide to go in without his ‘permission’.

“When did you arrive?” he asks as I take my seat.

“Just now. I did knock on the door but you’re day dreaming,” I see him pouting that I can’t help but chuckle.

We stay silent for quite a few moments until Sakurai-san arrived at the room 15 minutes later.

I keep debating with myself about what I saw in Sakurai-san expression as he sees me inside the room. Rather than annoyed, I think frustrated is the right way to describe it as he see me in the same room. As he makes his way to the seat opposite of Aiba-san, he asks, “I don’t think you’re in the same major that requires you to sit here tonight, Ninomiya-san? Why are you here?”

I heard annoyance in his tone. Before I could answer, Aiba-chan cuts me off.

“He’ll play games if he keeps staying inside the room. I… had to drag him here.”

I see the man smirk.

Trying my very best to ignore him, I went to the end of the table, far away from them before I flip open my note book, revising my own notes.

“Don’t mind me.  I’ll do my own business here,” I say, earning a response of ‘Good’ from the older man.

Being in one room with two people doing their study group is hard. I try to focus for the first 30 minutes but in the end, I arranged the chair before laying down and playing my game, listening to the conversation between the two.

“Do you understand this? Should I explain it again?” he asks. I can feel that my best friend shakes his head. Sighing, the older man starts explaining the topic for a second time.

I’m sure that Sakurai-san has explained it to him a few times but yet, he still didn’t understand the topic

Sitting straight, I watch the two of them at the other end of the room. The sight is beautiful, only if it isn’t Sakurai-san who has this temper that I keep remembering in my mind.

But with Aiba-chan, this time, he just went soft. Every word he utters, explaining to the kouhai sounds calm, nice and if it was me learning, I’m sure I’d understand it in a short amount of time. But it’s Aiba-chan we're talking about. He needs it to be explained a few times, and if he is lucky enough, he will understand or maybe he needs more explanation.

Or maybe, Sakurai-san has started to lose his patience when he hits Aiba-chan head with a roll of paper.

“Gomen!” Aiba-chan says in response.

“Seriously? This is basic. If you don't understand this, how are you going to understand the next topic?” I see Aiba-chan pout. “Seriously, you’re not getting a break this week, Aiba-kun. This weekend, my room.”

I take a peek from my DS, looking at the reaction my best friend had. He just looks down at his notes before I hear Sakurai-san continue his ramble.

“I never understand why am I taking you as my PA, when you’re so stupid.”

I roll my eyes as I hear him says that.

“Says the one who keeps interrupting his PA's class schedule,” I can’t help saying it aloud causing the two of them to look at me. One gives me a ‘stop talking’ look, the one give me an ‘I will kill you’ look.

“So you’re blaming me, when it’s obvious he is the stupid one here?”

“Watch out your mouth, Sakurai-san!”

“He should prioritize his life. If he asks, I will allow him to go to class. And now that he’s this stupid, it has become my responsible to teach him all the things he missed. And you blame me for that?”

“If it is not for your stupidity to think that your PA is a student, these things won’t happen. I know Aiba-chan more than you know him. He’s not stupid so stop calling him that!”

“ENOUGH!!!” Aiba-chan’s voice echoes in the room. “I-I think, maybe that's enough… for today.” He rearranges his books, stands up before bowing a little to the man sitting opposite him.

“I’ll see you tomorrow night. It seems like I have a lot to learn.” Sakurai-san didn’t answer him, he just nodded a little, agreeing. I could see the satisfaction on that man’s face as he did that, probably because he thought he was winning against me, despite what I had just told him.

Aiba-chan bowed one last time before he leaves the two of us in the room.

Shaking my head, I start to pack my stuff before the older man speaks up.

“I don’t want you to be here or anywhere while I’m teaching him, Ninomiya-san. I don’t care what you do, but next time, if he invites you to accompany him, declines him,” he says in a serious tone.

I chuckle.

“Why? Because it’s hard for you to abuse him when you have an audience?”

“He can’t focus when you’re here. It’s distracting for him.”

I roll my eyes one more time before take all my stuff with me, heading out the room. But Sakurai-san grabs my hand and stops me from going out.

“I'll remind you one last-“

I break free from Sakurai. “Whatever you say, Sakurai-san. As I said before, if you hurt him, I’m not afraid of doing something in return. Even if I get expelled.”

We stare each other down for a few seconds.

“So… good night.” and then I leave the discussion room.

That man seriously gets on my nerve. I never understand why he should act that harsh when he can act nicer.

I walk as fast as I could until I notice Aiba-chan sitting on a chair near the library. I stop in front of him but before I could open my mouth to say something, he stands and starts walking away. I follow him from behind knowing our destination will be our room.

It is about 5 minutes of walking silently before I try talking to him and he speaks before me.

“I don’t wanna talk about it.”

“About what?” I ask confused.

“Everything. About him calling me idiot, or about you and your girlfriend. I don’t want to talk about it.” I nod, before staying silent.

But it didn’t stay that way for long before he started talking again.

“Is she beautiful?” he asks, still walking with me following him.

“To me, yes, she is.”

“Where is she from?”

“Chiba… I guess..”

He stops walking before turn to me. his eyes widen excitedly. "Really? Which part?”

“Saaa….”I say, tilting my head, unsure of the answer. Come to think about it, I never asked her. Before I know it, he punches my arm, causing me to whine.

"Are you sure she’s your girlfriend? Shouldn’t you know about that simple basic thing?”

I shrug.

“Seriously, you need to introduce her to me.”

“I thought you were mad at me.” He waves his hand before putting it around my shoulder.

“Not when your girlfriend is a Chiba-girl,” he hypes happily, dragging me towards our hostel area.

This guy, I envy him for being able to change his mood in the blink of an eye.

I introduced him to my girlfriend a few days after that. I remember apologizing to Yumika-chan for her restless Q&A session from Aiba-chan. But she just shook her head telling me that it’s fine and Aiba-chan is an interesting person. I’m proud, of both my best friend and my girlfriend.

The three, no, five of us as Ohno-kun and Jun-kun joins us most of time, spent our time together a lot of the time until the end of semester. But most of the time it becomes four of us as Aiba-chan needs to attend his tutor session even during exam week.

But at least, after all the pain, the harsh words he received, and the effort put forth he received a good result and passed the first semester with flying colors. It is indeed a miracle, to think that he missed quite a lot, but manage to score that well.

“It's thanks to Sakurai-san that I able to pass ,” he says with a grin and I just roll my eyes, annoyed.
