CHAPTER 1
My phone just doesn't stop ringing. It annoys me to hell. I wouldn't need to take a look at the caller because I just know the one who’s calling me is my very own best friend who is too excited to enter college after delaying it for 1 whole year so that he can enter it with me. I sigh when I start to think about that.
That guy just takes our promise so seriously.
“Idiot,” I mutter as I fish out my phone from my pocket, putting it on silent mode after the ringing stops. Obviously, the community must be thinking that I’m an inconsiderate type of person who put my phone in a ringing mode, disturbing the gloomy mood of the people in the train.
“Can’t you wait?” I send him a message to receive a reply from him 30 seconds after I sent him mine.
“We’re gonna be late.” I shrug. I promise myself that I’m gonna hit that man so hard on his head once I meet him. I type a fast reply.
“You’re too early, Aiba-chan. Ceremony begins at 8.30 am. And you came at 6.30am. You’re an idiot!”
“Because you're always late. I have to wake up so early so that I can wake you up!” Annoyed, I put my phone back into my pocket, refuse to waste any more credit by replying to him after knowing that 5 more minutes I’ll arrive at the university area.
There, I see my bestfriend standing at the front gate, so absorbed with his phone. I’m sure he’s texting me again as not long after that I feel the vibration in my pocket.
“Where are you?” it reads. I smirk.
“Next to you, idiot! You seriously need to take a look at your surroundings, you know. ” I say to him, laughing when I see his startled face of his. Remembering my promise just now, I hit him hard on his head causing him to whine.
“You’re late!” he says in a sulking tone. I shrug.
“That’s because you’re too early Aiba-chan! See.” I show him my watch. “It’s only 7.40am. Now what am I gonna do for another 50 minutes? I could still be sleeping if I was at home."
I see him rolls his eyes, maybe he's annoyed by my words just now. Trying to hold my laugh in, I act like I'm playing with my phone, before he drags me into the university area.
We walk until we arrive in a place with a lot of tables, stating the major name for the student to find or get their timetables, only then do I feel grateful for coming this early to the university. We still need to get the schedule for the classes, and also maybe some clubs to get along. But, the second one isn’t really important for me. I know I’m capable of being alone, as long as I have my games.
“Why aren't you having the same schedule as mine, Nino?” Aiba-chan asks. This time, it’s me who rolls my eyes.
“I really wonder how were you able to pass the exam when you’re so stupid to notice that my major is not as same as yours.” His eyes widen.
“What?”
“What is your major, Aiba-chan?”
“Err…. Economy?”
“And what is mine?”
“EHHHHHHH….. I always thought you’re as the same major as mine. Now that you ask me to guess, how should I know?”
I shake my head, thinking how troublesome my bestfriend can be.
“Let’s see… Engineering?”
I shake my head again.
“No possible way medical because you don’t go for it,” I smack his head lightly.
“Business, Aiba-chan. Business. To think that I just told you my major last week. You already forgot it. I'm hurt.” I put my hand on my chest, faking a hurt face before chuckle a little when he hit my head soft.
“How are we going to protect each other Nino, when you’re not in the same class as me?” Aiba asks with a pouting lip.
“At least we’re in the same campus, Aiba-chan. Besides, I think, we’re older enough to take care of ourselves.”
I see him pout again. That's the one thing he always does when he wants to win the situation but refuses to argue. He knows he just lost.
I shook my head, ignoring my best friend who’s trying to find a good point to argue mine just now. I put my number and wallet into my bag, smirking to him when he still doesn’t have a good point to talk again. He pouts even more causing me to laugh. I smack his head lightly, causing him to whine playfully.
We are about to turn around, heading to the hall where the ceremony begins when I accidently push someone, causing my stuff to fall to the ground.
“Watch it. You don’t want to cause any trouble on your first day, junior.” The guy's voice is deep, somehow he sounds proud of himself. I lift my head to look at the owner of the voice.
That guy somehow looks elegant. From his clothes, the way he acts, he must be from a really rich family, or think of himself as someone who has power controlling the people around him. The smirks on the people following him support my thought.
“I’m sorry, it won’t happen again,” Aiba-chan speaks up after a while, sensing the tension between me and that senpai. I just bow a little, not wanting to make anything worst on my very first day. The man smirks, letting out an arrogant snort, he leaves causing the two of us to sigh, relieved.
“See… how we are going to protect each…”
“Shut up!” I cut him off. I start to collect my stuff into my bag before I stand again, putting my hand around his shoulders. “Look, if there’s anyone who is needed to be protected, it is you. I’ll be fine.”
“Huh?”
“He’s a senpai of yours. Not mine. I saw his ID.”
Somehow I saw my best friend grins.
“Don’t you think he’s cute?” Aiba-chan asks, causing me to snort annoyingly.
“I’m not gay, and no, I didn't find he’s cute. You know my very own definition of cute or beautiful is when…”
“Someone with a beautiful attitude and heart,” we say it together. “I know, Kazu. But… I think he’s my taste.”
I pull him to walk along with me to the hall for the opening ceremony.
“I don’t think he’s nice,” I mutter, causing my best friend to chuckle.
“And I don’t think that he’s gay,” he replies.
I sigh.
“So stop hoping, OK? We promised before that we’ll come here to achieve our dream. Not by having this lovey-dovey thing.”
He pouts as I finish my words, I could care less. I pull my hand away from him, and walk as fast as possible towards the university hall.
“Last one to arrive will get a rotten egg!” I run, leaving him behind, whining about me being unfair as he tries to catch up to me. I keep on running, laughing at my own rules.
***
“I heard about that senpai today.” I give him a questioning look as I keep arranging my clothes into my locker. I close the locker door once I done, before putting all the book I’d bought earlier on the table.
“Why is it suddenly, you’re interested in knowing about someone, Aiba-chan? You always mind your own business.”
As far that I know, or understand, there’s nothing funny in my sentence, but then I heard him laugh. Irritated, I stop doing my work, before turn my whole attention towards him.
“What’s so funny?” I ask, causing his laughter to stop abruptly. And then I saw him sigh.
“You’re jealous…” he teases, causing me to widen my eyes, before throwing my pillow towards him. Too bad for me that he succeed in avoiding it from hitting any part of his body before laughing with his usual high-pitched hyena like-laugh. I shake my head.
Once he stops laughing, he stands, walking towards me before takes a seat next to me on my bed.
“Oh come on, Nino-chan. It’s not that I want to know about him. It’s just, we need to know about him. I mean, he’s our senpai right. And every junior in our major needs to know all of their senpai so that we can ask for their help when it is needed for us to ask for their help,” he explains with unnecessary, repetitive words, showing nervousness in his voice.
“Stop. Calling. Me. Nino-chan! I’ll kill you!” he giggles at my annoyance towards my nickname.
We’ve been for two month in the university. While part of me is glad that at least we’re in the same room, there’s another part of me that hopes that Aiba will not cause any trouble that can distract my time here.
But with the nervousness in his voice, I just know that he will do something that might be worse once it is done. Like the time during our childhood, when Aiba said ‘I found a beautiful Chinese dress on my way to the playground’ and made me to wear it and took some pictures with it. Turns out, it’s his mum’s precious dress that they bought when she went to Beijing. It’s lucky enough that his mum doesn’t scold us for that, but I spend the whole month being teased when both of our parents found out about it; not before Aiba’s mum accidently printed out all the pictures in the film.
The way Aiba acts right now is just the same as the time he told me about that dress.
He’s doing something behind my back. But I’m sure whatever he’s doing is up to no good. To me or to him. But knowing him, he won’t spill the details until he can’t keep it anymore.
“So, what about him?” I ask, standing up, headed to my table, pretending to arrange my books properly.
“He’s really powerful! I mean his family. His father is the owner of the international trading company. You know the Hana Yori Dango drama? Well, he kinda has the same smell as Domyouji-sama!”
“So… are you going to be the heroin for him? Like Tsukushi-chan?” I ask as I went to his table. He is too absorbed in his story telling that he didn’t notice how I was now looking through the stuff in his bag.
“What? No. I mean- maa… impossi-“
“What is this, Aiba-chan?” I interrupt him with my question, showing him the ‘PA application form’ that I took out from his bag. I saw him swallow. From there, I knew I already hit the spot. So this is the secret. This is what he’s been hiding.
“it’s just… Sakurai-san needs a new PA,” he says, not having an eye contact with me, knowing how mad I am as he does something without discussing it with me.
“So you’re applying for it?” I ask him again. I shouldn’t be mad, so why am I? Aiba is a grown up man. He deserves to make his own decision.
Just this, being Sakurai-san's PA. I just have a bad intuition.
“Actually…” he pauses, snickering at something that I don’t really understand. “I already accepted. He loves the way I introduced myself when I said that everyone will smile if they say my name. Masaki. Right there, the smile when you pronounce the ‘ki’."
He pauses when he sees me with no movement.
“Are you mad?” he asks, panic.
I’m not mad. 'What will happen next?’ is a repeating question in my head. After a moment of being petrified by his 'Technically, I’m Sakurai-san's new PA’ declaration, I throw myself on my bed. My 3 years in this University is gonna be tough.
